The GreenGasCert project
The International Energy Research Centre (IERC) has partnered with Gas Networks Ireland (GNI) and the Renewable Gas Forum of Ireland (RGFI) to design a blueprint for a renewable gas certification scheme for Ireland. The GreenGasCert project is a collaboration of world-leading experts in bioenergy research, including Science Foundation Ireland’s Centre for Marine and Renewable Energy (MaREI), Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum (DBFZ) and the German Energy Agency (DENA). The project has the following goals:
- Deliver a robust methodology for calculating and accounting for greenhouse gas emissions savings arising from biogas use. The methodology will be tailored to Irish conditions and in accordance with international best practice and EU legislation.
- Develop a blueprint for a biogas registry that will provide a secure, reliable means of verifying and tracing all energy transactions and will meet the needs of all stakeholders.
- Propose a structure for an accreditation body to register and certify renewable gas producers and a means of auditing the scheme.
- Address the requirements of all stakeholders through enhanced stakeholder engagement and information sharing throughout the project.
The project partners acknowledge the support from both the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation and the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment.
